This jewel is the third hardest
gemstone and is one of the four
precious gemstones, which are
diamond, emerald, ruby, and sapphire.
What Are Rubies?
These precious gems are comprised
of the mineral corundum (aluminium
oxide), according to Wikipedia. The
element chromium is responsible for
the beautiful red color. Other varieties
of corundum produce sapphires of
various colors, including a similar pink
color.
Blood Red Rubies are Most Desired
These precious gemstones range in
color from pink to vibrant red. The
brightest red (or blood red), stones are
the most valuable. This preferred color
has also been called ‘pigeon blood’.
Other qualities that help determine the
gems’s value are clarity, cut, and carat weight.
Famous Rubies
The world’s most expensive ruby is the Sunrise Ruby. It weighed 25.29 carats
and sold for $30 million at a recent auction.
An auction of Elizabeth Taylor’s ruby ring broke the ‘price-per- carat’ record for
rubies in a 8.24 carat gem that sold at $512,925 per carat.
The Liberty Bell Ruby, stolen in 2011, is the largest mined ruby at 8.5
thousand carats. As its name suggests, it’s sculpted into a miniature U.S.
Liberty Bell shape.
Rubies are Energizing and Clarifying
These radiant, red gems are believed
to recharge energy levels. They may
impart a sense of bliss, vitality, and
desire for life. Rubies may help you
see your own strength and creative
potential, as well as sharpen your
intellect and increase concentration.
Some believe it can help you change
from the person you are today, to the
person you want to be, and wish to be
in your heart.
Kings, Priests and other leaders have
valued the ruby for its guidance to make wise and noble decisions for themselves
and others.
Ruby is the traditional birthstone for July and can be
more pink than garnet red as a birthstone. It is also the
stone for Aries and Aquarius zodiac signs.
